What Has WHI Done Since Haiti’s Earthquake?

From February to June 30, WHI-earthquake response activities provided the following:

Health care
As of June, WHI has undertaken mobile clinic activities in 26 camps in the west, south and south-east departments and provided primary care to 7,075 adults, pediatric care to 6,526 children and gynecology-obstetrician care to 399 pregnant women and sex workers.

Those 26 sites are: Parc Christophe (Léogane), L’acul (Léogane), Santo (Léogane), Martissant, Carrefour feuille, Delmas 32 (Acra), Bicentenaire, Delmas 75, Nan Regal (Petit-Goave), Delmas 56, Place Boyer, Decouze (Jacmel), Terrain Wolf (Jacmel), Eglise Wesleyenne (Jacmel), Terrain Lycée Pinchinat (Jacmel), Brisetout (Petion-Ville), Merger, Camperin, les Cayes (General Marion), Saint Louis du Sud, Carrefour, Delmas 32, Delmas 51, Delmas 2, Delmas 33 (Bureau des mines), Delmas 48.

Psychosocial support in camps
WHI worked in six camps: Cité-soleil, Delmas 48, Martissant, Méyotte, Léogane and Jacmel – creating activities for the children called “Soley Leve (Sunrise)”.

WHI reaches children in the range of 3-6 and those in the range of 7-12 with drawing, educational games, sports, liveliness and story reading. Programs for those in the range of 13-17 include dance, songs and vocational activities (macramé, Baneco, necklace-making etc).

Psychosocial support is provided to each child in the camp by trained psychologists and social workers. 887 children participated in these activities.

Sensitization in camps
Many basic community structures (schools, universities, churches) were largely destroyed after the earthquake, and much of the population had to move from one place to another. WHI has made necessary adjustments to promote needed prevention activities. Youth leaders, field agents and promoters have been quickly trained on ABC messages, malaria, TB and hygiene in the context of displaced populations. As a result 34,398 people have been reached with those different prevention messages.

Food kit distribution
WHI supported food distribution in Carrefour, Delmas 33, Signeau hospital, Help hospital, Delmas 60, Petion-Ville, Martissant, Delmas 40B, Henfraza, les Cayes and Jacmel. 12,800 food kits have been delivered to a total of 83,200 families. Each kit contained rice pots, pea pots, 1 oil liter, 1 milk box, 2 sardine boxes and 1 sugar bag.

Water distribution
WHI distributed 68,500 bags of water to families in tent cities of 58 units in Leogane, Delmas 40B (PV club), Delmas 75, Delmas 33 (Palais de l’art), Delmas 33 (Henfraza), Cité-soleil, Bicentenaire, Sartre (La couronne), Champ de Mars, Carrefour, Canapé-vert, Merger, Marianie, Stade Sylvio Cator, Signeau hospital and Jacmel.

Income Generating Activities
Agriculture continues to be a major factor of the economy of Haiti. To better address the needs of its beneficiaries, WHI and HPH trained 1,186 caregivers and older OVC in gardening and as a result 7.27 tons of seeds have been distributed. Moreover, HPH Partners trained 473 OVC aged 7-17 years old in animal husbandry and 145 goats have been distributed to those OVC and caregivers.

Cleaning up activity/Work force employment

More than just an activity of rehabilitation, cleaning up is also an employment building activity. WHI has supported work force engagement by employing 223 PLWHIV and 2,372 women (Caregivers of OVC) and youth to conduct rubble clearing and cleaning up activities at Delmas 40 B (PV club), Delmas 56, Henfraza, Palais de l’art, Télé nationale, Delmas 60 (Musso), Bicentenaire, Champ de Mars, Bourdon, Canapé-vert, Rue de la réunion, Léogane, Jacmel and Petit-goave.
