Our innovative high school here continues to be a great success. 112 students from poor families received an education and some relevant, hands-on training in food processing and other agricultural techniques this year.
28 seniors graduated in June 2009. Some of the graduates tell us they plan to go on to college on Sumatra island, while many have told us that they would like to stay on the island of Nias to teach their people what they’ve learned at the school. Others have already found local employment in the food processing industry.
Word has gotten out about the school–we are expecting a big influx of students next year.
The teachers’ subsidy and scholarship funds have enabled the school to maintain a higher quality of instruction and offer opportunities to families in greatest need.
The scholarships we provided especially helped seniors who would not have otherwise been able to afford all the testing required by the government.
Our school here also has a computer room with 8 operational computers; not bad for our remote island location.
This school is meeting a tremendous need here on the poor, earthquake-prone island of Nias. The kids need your support to keep it going.
