This tiny island of 20 million people off the coast of India has been racked by violence and conflict for many years. Finally this year the war between separatist rebel forces and the Sri Lankan military was declared over. We are praying that this will usher in a time of peace, restoration and development for the war-weary people of Sri Lanka.

As with nearly every conflict, it was Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable citizens who suffered the most. Some children were forcibly recruited to fight, while others dealt with the horror of losing loved ones or witnessing atrocities.

In addition to the fighting, pervasive poverty presents more challenges.

WHI partners with an organization here that addresses the needs of women and children. Sponsoring a Sri Lankan child will provide food, clothes, medical needs and an education. Sponsored children will also get access to a tutor outside the classroom to ensure they excel.
