Out of 1.2 billion of the world’s poorest people, an estimated 800 million live in rural areas. Often far removed from the technology, commerce and infrastructure of modern cities, people living traditional lifestyles in remote areas account for some of the world’s most acute poverty.
A lack of access to food, clean water, proper sanitation facilities and education are major obstacles to overcome, but WHI is responding with sustainable agricultural initiatives, animal husbandry projects, fresh-water well construction, sanitation improvement projects and rural education programs.
–More than 900 million people go hungry every day
–1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation
–1.4 million kids die each year from lack of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation
–Every six seconds, a child dies of hunger
Since the work began, we’ve drilled over 500 fresh water wells. We expect to drill 160 more in 2010.
In 2009, 1,200 impoverished farmers received seed, fertilizer, tools or other agricultural assistance thanks to WHI and our partners. More 2009 accomplishments include 47 latrine constructions, 14 classrooms built or renovated and the construction of two more dormitories.
In 2008, over 25,000 people in Asia and Africa benefited from WHI seed and animal multiplication programs. Additionally nearly 100,000 people received clean water through drilling and well rehabilitation programs.
