Indonesia

WHI’s work here centers on providing agricultural support and livestock, and helping rural farmers succeed. We’ve also started a unique school on the island of Nias that provides education and agricultural training for young people.

Our rural credit program gives loans to groups of farmers (group minimum is 5) who work together in order to increase their yields and maximize what they do with those yields. The farmers hold regular group meetings and vote how to best use the loan money provided by WHI.

Last year, 336 Indonesian farmers in need benefited from small loans to purchase inputs to increase their yields or to purchase livestock. Loans are repaid with interest to move the Rural Credit Program toward sustainability.

Demonstration plots are used to teach farmers about new technologies and crop varieties, which encourages organic farming methods such as organic pesticides. Even bio-gas is being made from cow manure to be used for cooking.

Our practical, effective work here in Indonesia is preventing hunger and building up rural communities.
