Our seed loans go to farmers in need. Upon a successful harvest, the same amount we loaned to them is donated to another farmer in need, making the program sustainable and empowering.
The usage of our high-quality seed and access to proper tools (axes, machetes, hoes etc.) and technical support ensures their yields provide enough to feed their families along with an extra abundance to sell or donate back into the program.
The goat program is similarly run, with farmers donating the first offspring back into the program, then keeping all subsequent goats for sale or personal use.
The Need for Clean Water
The need for clean water in Sierra Leone is enormous. According to a 2009 UNICEF ‘Quarterly WASH’ report:
“…With the highest maternal and under-5 mortality rates in the world, the challenges facing Sierra Leone’s women and children remain severe. Malaria, respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases account for more than 75% of the country’s under-five mortality. Malnutrition is also an underlying cause of 57% of child deaths. All these illnesses are closely linked with water and sanitation.”
“…Across the country, just 47% of the population have access to improved
drinking water sources, whilst just 30% of Sierra Leoneans have access to
adequate sanitation facilities. The high prevalence of diarrhoea and other infectious diseases amongst the under-5s only helps highlight the severity of the
situation.”
By drilling wells, building latrines and educating communities, WHI is helping to save lives and alleviate water and sanitation concerns throughout vulnerable parts of Sierra Leone.
